VideoLAN Movie Creator Release Nears

The team behind crowd-favorite VLC media player announced last December that they were in the middle of a new project dubbed the VideoLAN Movie Creator. VLMC is a cross-platform, non-linear video editing system built on the framework of the hugely successful media player—and like VLC, it will be released as free and open source software. The original VLC Player has already garnered 400 million downloads; can the release of the VideoLAN Movie Creator match that kind of success? With a release date fast approaching, let’s take a look at where does the project stands.

Here are the details you should know:
- Last week, an updated demo video of the latest version in action was released, showcasing some clever functionality (and a surprisingly good soundtrack).

- Initially, the project is going to be available for Windows and Unix. Want a Mac version? See below to help out.

- The first public release is estimated for March 24th and will be a preview. Though this means there will be more features to come, VLMC 0.0.1 can import video, cut sections out, resize, trim clips, export a render, and playback in real time.

- Look out for the VLMC project in the Google Summer of Code 2010!

The team is looking for contributors to the project, especially for development on the MacOS platform. If you are interested, please get in touch with Hugo or Ludovic. VLMC’s website is available to find out more information and eventually download the software.

Once you get your hands on VLMC for a test run, let us know what you think in the comments.
